Toronto comics included in brand-new Canadian standup series on CBC Gem

We could all use a laugh during these difficult times, and so the world premiere of The New Wave of Standup (12×10-min) couldn’t have arrived at a better time! All the episodes of this new CBC Gem original comedy series is set to launch on Friday, July 17 on the free CBC Gem streaming service. The 12 featured comics with their own diverse background and distinctive comedy technique were filmed in February at this year’s JFL NorthWest in Vancouver.

The 12 Canadian comedic stars include a variety of talent from Toronto, including Salma Hindy, a Muslim comic who is a biomedical engineer, Al Val, a transgender comic and Cassie Cao, a former economist turned comedian.

The New Wave of Standup also features Paul Rabliauskus, from Poplar River First Nation Reserve in Manitoba, Calgary’s Brett Forte and Ola Dada, a Nigerian-Canadian from Alberta and many more.

Matty Vu is one of the comics as well, who produces “Yellow Fever,” Vancouver’s only comedy show by Asians for non-Asians (and also Asians). Toronto’s Kyle Brownrigg is also on the roster. Brownrigg was the first gay male to be awarded “Best Breakout Artist” at the Canadian Comedy Awards.

The series is executive produced by Bruce Hills and Heather Wallace, produced by Heather Wallace, and directed by Trish Neufield.
