Toronto Couple Turns Unique Hobby into Custom Rug Works of Art

>When this Toronto woman was asked to return to her sales job, mid-pandemic, she felt as others have along with her, uncomfortable going through with it. Deciding to leave her job and the feelings of being unsafe, Jin Lee picked up an unusual hobby to fill her time. With the help of her partner Austin Tran, Lee began designing and creating custom rugs. Tran built the canvas frame used to produce the pieces, Lee bought the tufting gun and the two began with their creations.

Contrary to popular belief, rugs are not limited to plain rectangles and Persian designs. Lee and Tran are using this new art form to create custom, unique and beautiful pieces. No design is off limits for these made-to-order rugs. You can even choose to have your own fluffy, cartoon version of a pet immortalized with these yarn works of art.

Creating the Custom Rugs

To begin the rug creations, a piece of tufting cloth is tightly stretched across the canvas, typically large 2×4 wooden edges pieced together into a square. Any image can be chosen for the rugs, from characters to real people to abstract works of art. Once the design is selected it is projected onto the canvas, backwards, and traced so the exact image can be replicated. The design is backwards because the rug is sewn and weaved from the back, so the image is shown on the front side. A tufting gun is used to create the rug, almost a hand-held sewing machine. The gun needles weave yarn through the canvas, very quickly, creating entire rugs in just a couple of hours, depending on how intricate the chosen design is.

Once completed, a carpet adhesive is applied to the back to ensure no yarn comes loose. The beautiful pieces are then cut free and the duo work tediously to trim stray edges and smooth down the surface. Once perfected the gorgeous rugs are ready to be displayed!
